Milarepa with Petha and Zesay.

Milarepa singing “Fulfillment of My own Aspiration” (Tib: bsam pa rdzogs lugs kyi glu 'di blangs so)

Galleria Alessandra Bonomo, Rome

The lower portion of the painting (not shown in the detail here) includes excerpts from Milarepa’s Song of Determination.

English translation of these Tibetan verses:

  No one around my corpse.
No one cries when I die.
If I die in this way, in solitude, I, a yogi, am satisfied.
No one knows where I have gone.
No one has any idea what has happened to me.
In this way, in solitude, I, a yogi, am satisfied.
I wish that I, a poor man, find my place of death in a cave of a valley where no one lives.
May this wish be accomplished for the benefit of all sentient beings.
If this wish is fulfilled, I, a yogi, am satisfied.
